Q
Chooch, I feel I'm horribly uneducated on the Israel/Palestine situation. :( I mean, I understand the basic conflict, but I know there's much more to the issue and I have no idea where to start looking. Are there any links/articles/videos on the topic that you've found particularly accurate or informative? Zayn's tweet definitely makes me want to learn more on this issue.

Here is one of the biggest benefits to having zayn tweet this; uninformed people decide to figure out what’s going on. Unfortunately, I’m not the best person to talk to about this, but I’ll try my best. I also know that twerk-it-larry is pretty informed on the situation and has faced it first hand.

So, Zayn Malik tweeted this today:

Some history:

image

Until1946, Palestinians lived all over the country, some Jewish people did too, and they actually lived pretty peacefully.

After WW2, the British, finding that Jews felt unsafe in Europe, decided to establish Israel as their state. Over a million fled to Israel from 1948-1970.

Here’s some more history.

Here’s a video.

Here’s a post about some of the ways Palestinians are discriminated against.

Here’s whats happening now:

The current escalation was caused when 3 Israeli teenagers were kidnapped while they were found on Palestinian land. Israeli government was quick to blame Hamas, the people in power in Palestine, they later admitted that that it was a lone act, in other words, Hamas wasn’t involved. In other words, you could make the argument that Israel blamed Hamas in order to justify the planned attack.

Further, the Israeli government was well aware the teens were dead, but acted as if they didn’t:

Yet for the next two weeks authorities put on a phony rescue effort, instituted a gag order to prevent the public from knowing the truth and rallied the Jewish domestic and diaspora populations in anticipation of their move against Hamas.

Sad.

The death toll is approaching 1,000, most of them women and children. That because Israel consistently target, hospitals, and UN shelters

Israel: 42.

"Israel has the right to defend itself?"

In a nutshell, the conflict is about two peoples, living in peace. One side does something, and the other reacts.

I’m not saying Palestine is innocent in all of this, but they are definitely the disenfranchised population. According to Human Rights Watch:

World Report 2014.

Israeli forces killed more Palestinian civilians in the West Bank and demolished more Palestinian homes than in 2012. Israel continued to build settlements in the West Bank, violating international law. Palestinian security forces in both the West Bank and Gaza enjoyed virtual impunity from criminal prosecution despite credible allegations of torture. In Gaza, Israel and Egypt impeded rebuilding of the devastated economy by blocking virtually all exports. Israeli and Palestinian security services in the West Bank and Gaza arrested people arbitrarily and unlawfully restricted people from protesting.

Oh and:

Reasons why I’m excited for “Dear White People:”

  • Black actors portraying 3-dimensional characters
  • Honest social commentary
  • Targeted to the college age demographic
  • Thorough exploration of the various forms of racism in America
  • Tessa Thompson’s voice and Tyler William’s afro wig

Reasons why I’m not excited for “Dear White People:”

  • White people calling it racist
  • Mainstream media agreeing with the white people calling it racist

The claim that a company like McDonald’s can’t afford to pay wages over the minimum is absolutely insulting when you compare the salary of its CEO to one of its crew members.

I worked at a McDonald’s in New York over the summer and did a little math while I was there. In 2011, former McDonald’s CEO James Skinner made $8.75 million with compensation, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. In comparison, crew members made $7.25 an hour, for about $15,000 a year, if they stayed at the job year-round.

If you take Skinner’s total salary in 2011 and assume that he worked 40-hour week, he would have made $4,200 an hour. In one hour, he made 580 times more than the average McDonald’s worker. James Skinner made $33,600 a day, which is twice the salary tht a McDonald’s crew member makes in a year of full-time work.

Looking at it another way, the average worker would have to work for almost 600 years to make the salary that Skinner made in 2011. In one year, Skinner makes more than I could make in at least six lifetimes.

Genocide Of The Native American Peoples- Post Civil War Years America.  "kill the Indian and save the man"

The Indian boarding school movement began in the post Civil War era when idealistic reformers turned their attention to the plight of Indian people. Whereas before many Americans regarded the native people with either fear or loathing, the reformers believed that with the proper education and treatment Indians could become just like other citizens. ie “Assimilation” = (Genocide)

One of the first efforts to accomplish this goal was the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania, founded by Captain Richard Henry Pratt in 1879. Pratt was a leading proponent of the assimilation through education policy. Believing that Indian ways were inferior to those of whites, he subscribed to the principle, “kill the Indian and save the man.”

Children were usually immersed in European-American culture through appearance changes with haircuts, were forbidden to speak their native languages, and traditional names were replaced by new European-American names. The experience of the schools was often harsh, especially for the younger children who were separated from their families. In numerous ways, they were encouraged or forced to abandon their Native American identities and cultures. The number of Native American children in the boarding schools reached a peak in the 1970s, with an estimated enrollment of 60,000 in 1973. Investigations of the later twentieth century have revealed many documented cases of sexual, manual, physical and mental abuse occurring at such schools.

Arriving at the boarding schools, their lives usually altered dramatically. They were given short haircuts (a source of shame for boys of many tribes), uniforms, and English names. They were not allowed to speak their own languages, even between each other, and they were expected to attend church services and encouraged to convert to Christianity. Discipline was stiff in many schools (as it was in families and other areas of society), and it often included chores and punishments.

The following is a quote from Anna Moore regarding the Phoenix Indian School:

"If we were not finished [scrubbing the dining room floors] when the 8 a.m. whistle sounded, the dining room matron would go around strapping us while we were still on our hands and knees."

I really can’t believe this is happening.

"There are Negroes who will never fight for freedom. There are Negroes who will seek profit for themselves alone from the struggle. There are even some Negroes who will cooperate with their oppressors. These facts should distress no one.Every minority and every people has its share of opportunists, profiteers, free-loaders and escapists.”-Martin Luther King, Jr.
